She holds the accolade of being a New York Times bestseller and has been writing now for longer than 20 years. She currently lives with her husband and three children in Magnolia, south Arkansas. Her early literary career was spent writing about ghosts in poetry, after which she wrote about teenage problems and plays. Her greatest success has come from her book writing however.
She wrote the Aurora Teagarden series beginning with "Real Murders" in 1990 and her last novel of this series was "Poppy Done To Death" in 2003. In all there have been eight books in the Aurora Teagarden series.
From 1996 she was to write the Shakespeare series of books which was based in Arkansas but Charlaine Harris has in fact stated she will write no more for this series.
After finishing with Shakespeare novels she began to write what is by far her best known yet set of books - The Southern Vampire Mysteries. These novels are about a telepathic waitress known as Sookie Stackhouse and based in a small town in Louisiana called Bon Temps. Dead Until Dark - the first one of the series was to win the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Mystery which was in 2001. These books have been released in many countries including United States, United Kingdom, Philippines, Australia, Japan, Germany and France to name a few.
Alan Ball, who produced and created the hit HBO television series called Six Feet Under, contacted Charlaine Harris to make a show based upon her Sookie Stackhouse series. Of course she happily agreed and the first of the series was shown in September of 2008 and it was named "True Blood". The second series was named "True Blood 2", strangely enough and it began showing on HBO television in June 2009.
A new series of books was also started by Charlaine in October 2001 called Harper Connelly, which tells of a young lady who can find dead bodies by using her clairvoyant powers.
